Tick off who's at the game, pick a name for each slot, and the rest of the squad drops onto
the bench automatically — up to two subs. Save a lineup you like, then stack up to four of
them into a quarter-by-quarter game plan and play it through as a rotation.

First match of the season vs White Rose Allstars U9 Brazil. Geoffrey was referee for this game so couldn't coach; Matthew ran the touchline alone. Strong start — Daire (4') and Arthur (5') put us 2-0 up inside the first five minutes, comfortably the best spell of the game. White Rose levelled either side of half-time (18', 20') then went ahead in the second half (28', 35') for a 4-2 final score. Adam started in goal and moved outfield for the closing spell, with CJ (who'd been providing well going forward, assisting both goals) covering goal for that stretch.
Geoffrey's Feedback
Watching as referee rather than coaching: the first 15 minutes were excellent, the whole team played really well. Once Verity came on (8') the shape and positional discipline slipped, particularly Daire and Verity both taking too much freedom rather than holding their positions, and that's when the goals started going in. Adam was excellent in goal all game and was even recognised by the opposition coach for his saves; CJ was also very good in his outfield role but struggled once he went in goal for the closing stretch, making a couple of mistakes that led to goals — with hindsight Adam probably should have stayed in net.
Shared Takeaways
We need a clear, agreed goalkeeper policy rather than deciding on the day — either a settled 1st/2nd choice keeper or an explicit split (e.g. a half each) every game. Also: Charlie has left the squad — fixture clashes with his rugby commitments, and he's chosen to focus on rugby instead. Squad is now down to 6. Isaac picked up a knock during the game and had to come off the pitch a couple of times, cutting into his minutes — worth checking in on. At full time Matthew wanted to give Adam Man of the Match despite the loss; after talking it over afterwards, we agreed MoM should only be given on a win, so we reversed it — instead introducing a new "Captain for the next match" recognition for the standout performer when we don't win. Adam gets that armband for the next game.
Actions for Next Session
Agree the goalkeeper approach (1st/2nd choice vs. split by half) before the next match. Reinforce positional discipline, especially for subs coming into the game, off the back of today's second-half slip. Discuss the squad-size impact of Charlie leaving — whether to look for a replacement or continue with 6.
Players Present Adam, Arthur, CJ, Daire, Isaac, Verity (6) — Charlie absent (has since left the squad, focusing on rugby). Geoffrey refereed; Matthew coached alone.
Fifth session. Started with some running and footwork with the ball — Daire, Adam and Isaac showed the best quality, Isaac comfortable on both feet, while Verity, Arthur and Charlie struggled the most. Moved into a 3v3 attack vs defense: defenders Isaac, Charlie and Arthur plus Adam in goal against attackers Daire, CJ and Verity. The defensive unit won well playing together — the only improvement point is Isaac pushing forward with his teammates to keep the defensive line aligned.
Geoffrey's Feedback
Good tempo session. A technical gap is opening up in the footwork/ball-mastery work between Daire, Adam and Isaac on one side and Verity, Arthur and Charlie on the other — worth tracking over the coming sessions. Really pleased with how the defensive trio (Isaac, Charlie, Arthur) plus Adam in goal worked together in the 3v3 — comfortably the best they've defended as a unit so far.
Actions for Next Session
Priority: work on corners next session — Matthew flagged this and we didn't get to it this time. Look into sourcing goal posts for training, currently very difficult without them. Buy a Man of the Match trophy.
Players Present Adam, Arthur, Charlie, CJ, Daire, Isaac, Verity (7)
Session run solely by Matthew, Geoffrey away on holiday. Only three of ours out (Arthur, Daire, Isaac), so we joined up with the Blues to make the numbers work. Basic footwork first without the ball then with it, then 3v3 drills, keeping our three together as a unit throughout to build the team bond. Finished with a mixed 5v5 — our three plus one Blues player and a keeper against the rest.
Matthew's Feedback
Good session overall. Keeping our three together as a unit through the footwork and 3v3 work worked well for the team bond. It came apart a bit in the closing 5v5 once the Blues were mixed in — everyone wanted to score and positioning went out the window — but there were a few good spells of accurate, patient passing that led to goals, which is an encouraging sign. Expects the full squad back next week and wants to train separately rather than joining another team, focusing on positioning, responsibilities and what's expected of each position. Keen for a proper catch-up before Tuesday's session once Geoffrey's back.
Actions for Next Session
Matthew wants to train separately (not joined up with the Blues) once we're back to a full squad next week, focusing on positioning, responsibilities and what's expected of each position. Proper catch-up between us needed before Tuesday's session.
Players Present Arthur, Daire, Isaac (3) — Adam, Charlie, CJ, Verity absent. Matthew ran solo, joined up with the Blues to make numbers; Geoffrey away.
Third session, first back on our own pitch, training alongside another Highlanders team. Only 5 of our 7 out (Arthur and Verity missing) and Matthew away, so ran solo — hard going to keep everyone focused single-handed. Didn't get through most of the planned running order: the perimeter warm-up went well, a passing exercise (one player on each corner plus one in the middle feeding the ball, control-then-pass) started poorly but improved, then attack-vs-defense and defending-without-tackling work that didn't land well. Moved into mini-games with the other team — started mixed, then had our team play together as a unit against theirs for the first time, two matches.
Geoffrey's Feedback
One discipline moment worth flagging: Daire got frustrated during a disagreement about who should go in goal and reacted poorly towards the coaches — another coach on the pitch picked him up on it and told him to calm down. Handled in the moment, but worth keeping an eye on. Individual feedback for each player is in Player Memory.
Shared Takeaways
First match finished 0-0 — very strong in defense and sharp in attack, pleasing. Second match we lost 0-1, the goal came from a lost ball. Positioning was much better than expected for a first game together as a unit. Ended the session with each player giving quick feedback on the day — everyone came away happy with how the team performed.
Actions for Next Session
Get back to the parts of the plan we didn't reach (attack-vs-defense, defending without tackling) since they weren't productive this time. Work with Daire on staying calm and disciplined in his position. Check in with Isaac on energy/mindset. Keep the passing focus going since it's clicking for Charlie and CJ. Start exploring committing Adam to the goalkeeper role.
Players Present Adam, Charlie, CJ, Daire, Isaac (5) — Arthur and Verity absent. Matthew away; Geoffrey coached solo.
Second session. Main exercise: pitch split into four zones with a dead zone in the middle. Out of possession, two defenders (one each side) with two attackers dropping into the dead zone as a first line of defense. In possession, attackers push into the opposite wide zones on each side while the defender on that side supports forward into the dead zone. Brought in Joey, a guest player from the B team, to balance the numbers.
Matthew's Feedback
Really positive session, more than good. Loved the attitude from the group. Glad we stuck to just the one exercise on positioning so it actually sticks rather than jumping around. Feels serious now — a big step up from what we had at Dalton.
Geoffrey's Feedback
Went quite well, still needs more reps for the shape to click, but attitude was good throughout. Two things worth flagging outside the usual read: Isaac took a fall late in the session and played on, his mum confirmed afterwards he was fine. There was also a rough tackle from Daire on Verity during the session that's worth following up on the discipline side. Individual feedback for each player is in Player Memory.
Shared Takeaways
Good attitude across the board and clear progress on the shape, but decision-making on both sides of the ball is still developing — receiving in support range, heads up before deciding, staying involved after a pass, and pairing up/communicating defensively.
Actions for Next Session
Keep repeating the same shape to build the picture. Individual points to work on for each player are in Player Memory.
Players Present Adam, Arthur, Charlie, CJ, Daire, Isaac, Verity (7) + Joey (guest, B team)
First session. Get to know the players and start a read on each one: who's played before, positions, where they feel strongest, plus a feel for speed and how they are with the group. Kept it fun and ball-heavy.
Matthew's Feedback
Strong first session, good engagement from everyone. Early read on the profiles is in Player Memory. Standouts: Daire (technical, quick) and Verity (engine, fearless). Common themes across the group: positioning and movement off the ball.
Geoffrey's Feedback
Same read as Matthew. Focus points: CJ to keep focused and listening in a group, and Arthur to do instinctively what he already does well the moment he's called.
Shared Takeaways
All seven showed engagement and enthusiasm. Individual profiles are in Player Memory. Group development themes: positioning, movement off the ball, and team play.
Actions for Next Session
Suggested focus for next session: movement off the ball and positioning (the common theme). Confirm with Matthew.
Players Present Adam, Arthur, Charlie, CJ, Daire, Isaac, Verity (7)
